How to use it

  1. Choose a theme that matches where you are. The indoor and holiday lists use things found in most homes; the backyard list stays inside your own yard.
  2. Pick ten items for young children or a short hunt, twenty for older teams or a long one.
  3. Set the number of teams, tap Make a new list, then print. Each team gets its own sheet with a line for the team name.
  4. Agree the boundaries and the time to be back, and start the timer.
  5. Check each sheet when the teams return: one point per item, two for the hard ones.

Three kinds of item

Find items are brought back to base. Spot items stay where they are: the team points them out or takes a photo. Do items are small challenges, and they are usually what people remember afterward.

Before you start, walk through the house or yard and take out anything that is off limits. Put found things back at the end. For the full rules, ways to change the game and how to set boundaries for children, see how to play Scavenger Hunt.

Questions people ask

Do all teams get the same list?

Yes, the same items, so the hunt is fair. Each team’s copy lists them in a different order, so teams do not simply follow each other around.

How are points scored?

One point per item, and two for anything marked hard. A team that comes back late loses a point for every minute, which keeps everyone close to base.

How long should the hunt last?

Fifteen minutes for ten items indoors, twenty to thirty for a longer list or a yard. Small children tire quickly, so give them the shorter list.

Can children who cannot read play?

Yes, with an older teammate who reads the list aloud. Pair anyone under about eight with an older child or an adult.
