New Year's Eve party games to fill the hours before midnight
The evening is long and midnight is the only fixed point. Here are nine games and a timetable for the hours in between.

The problem with New Year’s Eve
Most parties end when people get tired. This one has an appointment at midnight, and everybody has to still be there, awake and in a good mood, when it comes. The usual trouble spot is the stretch between ten and eleven thirty, when dinner is over and the countdown is too far off.
Games are the fix, but only if they are spaced out. Run them back to back and the room is worn out by eleven.
A timetable
Arrivals to dinner. One standing game that people drift in and out of. Nothing with teams yet.
After dinner. If children are present, this is their hour: two short moving games, then their own early countdown.
Ten o’clock. The main team game. This is the one to plan properly, because it carries the hardest hour.
Eleven. Something seated, to bring the energy down and back up again.
The last fifteen minutes. Nothing with rules. Something quick that can be dropped the moment someone says it is nearly time.
Give the games a year
What separates a New Year’s Eve game from the same game on any other night is the subject. Every game on this list can be pointed at the year that is ending: the slips in the bowl, the names on the sticky notes, the songs in the playlist, the statements in the opening round.
It takes no extra preparation, and it gives the evening a shape: by midnight the room has gone back through the whole year together.
The games
-
Two Truths and a Lie
Play the year-in-review version: three things you did this year, one of them made up. It gets people telling stories about the last twelve months without a round of speeches.
- 3–20 players
- 15 min
- Ages 10+
- Calm
- Needs nothing
-
Who Am I?
Use people who were in the news this year. It works standing up with a drink in one hand, which is how most of the early evening is spent.
- 4–20 players
- 20 min
- Ages 8+
- Lively
- Needs sticky notes or paper and tape, a pen
-
Freeze Dance
If there are children, this is their game, and it should happen early while they still have the energy. Adults can judge from the couch.
- 3+ players
- 10 min
- Ages 3+
- Rowdy
- Needs music you can pause

-
Balloon Keep Up
There are usually balloons in the room already. One round of keeping them off the floor burns ten minutes and wakes everyone up after food.
- 2+ players
- 10 min
- Ages 4+
- Rowdy
- Needs balloons, a timer
-
Name That Tune
Build a playlist of songs from the year that is ending, plus a few from each decade represented in the room. It doubles as the soundtrack for the rest of the night.
- 3+ players
- 20 min
- Ages 8+
- Lively
- Needs a phone or speaker, a playlist made in advance, paper and pen for scores
-
Fishbowl
The centerpiece for the long middle of the evening. Ask everyone to write slips about this year: people, places, shows, family events. Start it around ten.
- 6–20 players
- 40 min
- Ages 10+
- Lively
- Needs paper slips, pens, a bowl, a timer
-
Paper Telephone
A seated breather between the louder games. Have every opening sentence describe something that happened this year, then watch it turn into something that did not.
- 4–10 players
- 25 min
- Ages 8+
- Calm
- Needs a small stack of paper per player, a pen or pencil per player
- Ad position: inContentSecondary
-
Mafia
For an adults-only party that enjoys an argument. One game takes about half an hour, which is exactly the awkward gap between eleven and the countdown.
- 7–20 players
- 30 min
- Ages 12+
- Lively
- Needs a deck of playing cards or paper slips
-
Limbo
Quick, silly and good to watch. It fills the last fifteen minutes before midnight when nobody wants to start anything with rules.
- 4+ players
- 15 min
- Ages 5+
- Lively
- Needs a broom handle or pool noodle or a length of rope, music
Questions people ask
How do you keep kids awake until midnight on New Year's Eve?
Alternate a moving game with a seated one every half hour, and hold an early countdown at nine or ten for the youngest. Children who know they have had their own midnight go to bed more happily.
What games work for a mixed-age New Year's Eve party?
Freeze Dance, Balloon Keep Up, Limbo and Name That Tune all work with children and adults together. Save Fishbowl and Mafia for after the youngest have gone to bed.
How many games do you need for New Year's Eve?
Plan one game per hour and treat it as a ceiling. Four games across the evening is usually right, with one long one in the middle.
